Your Ex Gets WHAT?!: Divorce Money with Lucky Rasappah

September 21, 2026•5 min read

What Lucky Rasappah Wants You to Know About Money, Marriage and Divorce

Divorce is expensive. Everyone knows that.

But what if some of the biggest financial damage comes from the things you never thought to ask?

Do you actually know what you and your spouse own? Do you know where all the accounts are? What happens if your spouse has handled the finances for the last 20 years and suddenly you need to figure it all out?

And here is the one that really got me.

You get divorced. You sign the papers. You move on with your life.

But is your ex actually out of your financial life?

That is the conversation I had with Luxmihaasan “Lucky” Rasappah on this episode of Gloves Off. And it comes back to something I talk about all the time.

Building wealth is only part of the equation.

You also have to know how to protect it.

About Lucky Rasappah

Lucky Rasappah has spent more than 25 years helping individuals and business owners navigate financial planning, wealth protection, retirement, estate planning and risk management.

He is a Universal Financial Literacy Coach and holds several financial designations, including Chartered Life Underwriter, Certified Health Insurance Specialist and Chartered Financial Divorce Specialist.

What interested me about Lucky’s work is the intersection between money and one of the most emotional transitions a person can experience.

Because people do not stop making financial decisions just because they are emotional.

In fact, that may be exactly when those decisions matter most.

Do You Actually Know What You Own?

Here is a question I love from our conversation:

How do you know you are getting half if you do not even know what 100% is?

It sounds obvious until you really think about it.

In many marriages, one person handles most of the finances. They know the accounts, investments, pensions, insurance, debts and paperwork. The other person may know those things exist, but not necessarily where they are, what they are worth or how they are structured.

That arrangement may work perfectly well for years.

Until it doesn’t.

If a marriage ends, suddenly knowing the complete financial picture becomes incredibly important.

And this is bigger than divorce.

If you are married today and have absolutely no idea where your household assets are, what accounts exist, what you owe or how your financial life is structured, that is worth changing whether your marriage is fantastic or falling apart.

Financial awareness is not distrust.

It is adulthood.

Your Ex Gets WHAT?!

This was the idea that inspired the title.

A divorce may end your marriage, but that does not mean you should assume every part of your financial life has automatically been cleaned up.

Wills. Powers of attorney. Pensions. Investments. Insurance. Beneficiary designations.

People can be so focused on getting through the divorce that the financial cleanup afterward becomes an afterthought.

That is why this conversation matters.

Know what needs to be reviewed. Find out what changes automatically where you live and what requires action from you.

Because “I thought that was taken care of” is a terrible thing to discover when it is too late.

Maybe the Prenup Conversation Is the Point

Prenups have terrible PR.

Mention one before a wedding and it can sound like you are already planning the divorce.

But Lucky and I talked about another way to look at it.

Maybe the value is not simply the document.

Maybe it is the conversation.

What do each of you own? What are you building together? What stays separate? What happens if one person leaves a career? What happens to a business? What expectations do you each have around money?

These are not particularly sexy conversations.

But neither is discovering during a divorce that two people had completely different assumptions about their financial lives.

We talk about money far too late.

Sometimes we wait until there is already a problem before we are willing to say the uncomfortable thing out loud.

That is exactly why I wanted to take the gloves off.

Three Things That Stayed With Me

1. Know where the money is.

You should understand your financial life whether you are single, happily married or contemplating divorce.

2. Do not assume the paperwork took care of everything.

After a major life change, review the documents, accounts and beneficiary designations that determine where your money goes and who has authority over it.

3. Have the uncomfortable conversation before you need it.

Whether that means a prenup, a marriage contract or simply an honest conversation about money, clarity is a lot easier when you still like each other.

Want to Go Deeper?

The public conversation only scratches the surface.

Inside the full episode, Lucky and I get into the questions people really need to be asking. How do you figure out what you actually own? What happens when one spouse has controlled the finances? How could an ex remain connected to parts of your financial life? And what should couples understand about prenups and marriage contracts?
