Sometimes the Biggest Risk Is Staying Home
Last week, I did not know Xhoni Mimillari. I had connected with him just a few weeks earlier on LinkedIn. Today, I call him a friend.
People warned me. They asked if I was crazy to get on a plane and fly to the French Riviera to spend several days with complete strangers I had met on the internet. They used words like scammer and con artist. They told me to be careful.
I did my due diligence. And then I got on the plane anyway.
I shared the full story on LinkedIn here.
What We Actually Came There to Do
A few days later, I was sitting around a table in a villa in the South of France with people I had never met in person before. We came to talk business. Strategy, ideas, the kind of conversations that sharp, ambitious people have when they get in a room together.
But something shifted almost immediately. We ended up talking about our lives. What we wanted. What scared us. Where we were playing small. Who we thought we could become if we stopped holding back.
We laughed until we could not stop. We stayed up talking long past when we should have gone to sleep. We went to Monaco. We took a yacht out onto the Mediterranean. We swam in the sea together. And somewhere in the space between the strategy and the stories, the laughter and the adventures, strangers became friends. Real ones. The kind that see things in you that you have not quite seen in yourself yet.
Why We Choose Distrust
I could have missed all of it. And I almost did, because the voices telling me not to go were loud.
Here is what I understand about distrust: it feels like wisdom. It feels like self-protection. If you never let anyone in, no one can disappoint you. If you never take the chance, you cannot make the wrong decision. If you stay with what you know, you can protect yourself from almost everything.
But you may also protect yourself from everything that could change your life.
Distrust is easy. It requires nothing from you. Trust, real trust, the kind that is grounded in your own discernment rather than fear, that takes courage. It asks you to look at a situation honestly, do what you need to do to assess it, and then make a decision based on what you actually believe rather than what other people are afraid of.
The Real Question
Maybe the answer is not trusting everyone. I am not naive about that. The answer is learning to trust yourself enough to say yes when something extraordinary is in front of you.
That is what gives us the freedom to stay open. To people we could not have planned on meeting. To experiences that do not show up in any itinerary. To a version of our lives that is bigger than the one we were quietly settling for.
Last week, these people were strangers. I am going home with friendships, memories and a vision for my life that did not exist before I boarded that flight. That is not nothing. That is everything.
What This Week Taught Me
Sometimes the risk is not getting on the plane. The real risk is the life you do not live because you were too afraid to go.
Do your due diligence. Trust your gut. And when something real is in front of you, have the courage to say yes.
